VINE conference April 2008
The VINE Project is holding its first Conference at Lancaster next
April. The VINE Project was originally conceived by FACT and is
still developing now as a 'not for profit organisation' with funding
from both Natural England and CCW. Please see the attached
flyer which give details on the conference in April next year.

Winter Tree Planting Events
If you are holding a tree planting event this winter or for that
matter any other woodland related activity and you would like to
promote the event to a wider audience then why not add it to the
dedicated events area of the Tree for all website run by the
Woodland Trust. You can even apply for a tree planting
grant as well once you have completed the application process and
registered you event.

Community Woodland Network National Conference
Come and join us for our third national conference at Stoke Rochford
Hall in Lincolnshire for a fantastic two days this summer. We have
an excellent programme of speakers and workshops lined up.
Over 150 people are expected to attend from all parts of the
country. Enclosed are full details and a copy of the booking form.

Royal Forestry Society Evening Meeting
Nidd Gorge Woodland near Knaresborough
The Woodland Trust manage over 66 ha (170 acres) of ancient woodland
in the Nidd Gorge. Within the woodland
lie many features which indicate a fascinating historic past A large
area of the woodland, on the northern bank of the River Nidd, was
planted in the 1960’s with a combination of pure conifer stands and
mixed broadleaves. Now the Trust is in the process of restoring the
woodlands through active management work and the guided tour of the
wood will address various issues.

Biodiversity in the New Forest Conference
Please find attached details of a conference that we are organising
in September 25th and 26th of this year, in Brockenhurst, on the
theme of 'Biodiversity of the New Forest'.
The meeting is being organised by Bournemouth University in
association with the British Ecological Society, The Forestry
Commission and the National Park Authority. Specialists on different
groups of organisms will present an account of current information
regarding the status and distribution of species occurring within
the New Forest, focusing on those of particular conservation
interest or concern, and with the aim of identifying current trends
in abundance. Information on the status and trends in the condition
of different habitats will also be presented.

South West
Woodland Show
Preparations are well under way for this year’s South West Woodland
Show to be held at Exeter racecourse, Haldon, near Exeter and in the
adjoining Forestry Commission woodlands. Letters inviting companies
to exhibit and booking forms are now being despatched to existing
contacts in the region and the wider industry. All suppliers to the
industry, in the widest possible sense, should consider exhibiting
and new companies are especially welcome.

OPENspace Research into Practice Seminar
Series
The Research Centre for inclusive access to the outdoors is
pleased to announce a series of seminars to take place over between
September, 2006 and March 2007 in Edinburgh. These are based on the
results of research undertaken by the centre and cover a range of
topics within the overall theme of inclusive access to the outdoors.

National Social Forestry Conference, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
The conference is aimed at those involved in the developing
field of social forestry and allotment regeneration projects
including community groups and voluntary organisation. Places are
limited to 100 and are offered on a first come first serve basis.

A Visit to Graybeards, New Quay, Wales
Sustaining Woodland Projects through Community Involvement. By
Kind invitation of Sue and Mike Appleton
Meet at 10.30 am for 11.00 am start. Concludes by 4pm
The wood consists of 25 acres of broadleaved woodland managed in
partnership with Friends of Pen yr Allt
Community Group. Sue and Mike Appleton have developed successful
collaborations with the Local Education
Authority, Social Services and Health Care Bodies by providing an
inspiring woodland venue and programme of
green woodworking, woodland management and arts based activities
where socially excluded sectors of the
community can gain confidence, self worth and emotional development.

Summer/Autumn 2006
BTCV Woodland Training Courses
The BTCV are running a whole range of woodland and community related
courses over the summer and into the autumn. Ranging from tree id,
woodland management, hedgrerows, leadership skills and coppicing.
Courses also range in length from a whole week to just a day -
making them even more suitable for brushing up those
skills or acquiring new ones.

Chiltern Workshop Visit
Please support the local Arboricultural Association Branch by
booking onto the conducted tour of Philip Kooiman's Chiltern
workshop. It promises to be a very interesting visit. For those who
simply like to see wood put to good use, it is a chance to see some
of the best quality hand crafted furniture in the country and for
those who dabble in wood turning or carpentry an opportunity to ask
lots of questions and pick up lots of tips!

August & September 2005
Pond Survey Training Courses in Warrington & Oxford
Pond Conservation will be running training courses in 2005 in
the use of national standard methods for surveying ponds for plants
and invertebrates. One day training courses will be held at the
Environment Agency Offices at Birchwood, Warrington on Wednesday 31
August and on Thursday 1 September, and at Oxford Brookes University
in Oxford on Tuesday 6 September and on Wednesday 7 September. The
fee for attending a course will be £200 for government / statutory
bodies and commercial organisations and £50 for charities and
volunteer surveyors.

Friends of Clinkham Wood & CVS Skills Race
We held the Skills Race last year and it was a huge success so
we are doing it all over again at Aintree Racecourse and we can
provide transport from St Helens if it is needed. We actually have
30 workshops throughout the day and over 30 stall holders all there
to help you find out what is best for you and your organisation with
regards to training and development. We would love you to come along
and use this FREE event to find out more of what training is
available for the voluntary and community sector so why don't you

Community Woodland Network 2005 Conference
Over 130
delegates attended the second CWN Conference on the 17th and 18th
June at University College Worcester. We had a hectic two days, with
demonstrations, talks, workshops and a wood visit hosted by the
Friends of Pepper Wood. What was so pleasing was the number of new
faces from groups who have recently established or are in the
process of getting off the ground. So thanks to everyone who came
along and sorry to those who missed it, see you next time!

“Teaching Trees” project, “Teaching Woods” will appeal to anyone

into your woods then this event is for you.
Likewise you may be a member of a “Friends of” group and want to
learn more about how to run organised woodland events for children.
This weekend will equip you with some of the skills and ideas
required to run successful educational visits that not only link to
the National Curriculum but are also fun!
