Ancient sweet chestnut threatened by airport expansion

Although this famous tree is not within the boundaries of the airport it is threatened with removal as it stands on the route of the flight path leading from/to the proposed new runway. Its girth is nearly 28ft (8.6m) or dbh 2.7m and it has been known about since 1937 when Arthur Mee wrote about it in his Staffordshire volume of The King’s England; he called it ‘a superb giant of old England’.
