Cattle get the thumbs up in Glenamara Park

February 2004

Wood pasture management in the Lake District ESA

The Rural Development Service have just completed their case study at Glenamara Park, Patterdale a site recently acquired by the National Trust in late 2002.

The Park is a wonderful Royal Forest with many ancient alders, birch and some unusual hazels.

Cattle are seen to be the key to the management of this site when grazed at low density. They eat rough vegetation but are less likely to browse on young tree growth. Also they break up vegetation mats with their hooves thought to aid tree regeneration.
