March 2004

Last year the Ancient Tree Hunt became a partner in a collaboration of 11 organisations to start putting huggable elms on the map.

Large elms are particularly interesting to natural historians because they support many other species of interest – fungi, lichens, bryophytes and butterflies to name but a few. For their Welcome to Walking Week in 2003 the Ramblers Association wanted to put their walks to a good purpose and asked walks leaders and their parties to look out for elms. More than 110 large elms were recorded and the details will be entered onto the Ancient Tree Hunt database. Soon it will be possible to locate these elms on our interactive map on www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk
