Five Tamworth x Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs are rooting around 50 ha of Southwick Wood, near Corby in Northamptonshire, as part of the plan to restore the original ancient wood pasture character of the wood.
These mighty diggers help to break up the ground in a manner akin to a mechanical digger. Says forest worker Phil Aldous ‘Their snouts are tough enough to root through anything’. And to give them a break from the hot weather we are experiencing now, the pigs can cool of f in a purpose built hog wallow.
The Forestry Commission are running workshops for those interested in learning more about woodland pasture restoration.
