Artist Biography |
|
Although born in England, I have
been living in Sweden for the last 40 years, the last 30 in
Drottningholm, not more than a few hundred yards from the "English" park
where these oaks grow. I usually paint landscapes, but no artist in his
right mind could resist trying to capture the wealth of stories
enshrined in the bark of these ancient trees. The idea of a gallery
devoted exclusively to portraits of ancient trees by artists living and
dead appeals greatly to me.
Two of my paintings of ancient oaks in the royal park of Drottningholm
Sweden. Acrylics on birch plywood. Both paintings about 30 cm in height,
so they might almost be described as "minatures". The oaks stand near
each other below a wooded mound known as "Flora's hill" (a copy of an
antique statue of Flora, the Roman goddess of vegetation, crowns the
hill). The one with the moth I call "ancient oak". The other I call "the
grey lady".
(An amusing detail: The moth flew in through the open window one night
when I was working on the finish of the painting and settled some
centimetres from where it is portrayed. It sat completely still for
about 20 minutes. Since it seemed to want its portrait painted, I
obliged. As I drew the last brushstroke it lifted and flew out into the
summer night, almost, one might suppose, with a satisfied smile on its
face). |
