Outline of the sites with
ancient trees which will be visited:
Glenamara Park, recently acquired by the National Trust, a wood
pasture interesting for its veteran trees and a wealth of archaeological
features. An opportunity to discuss management options for this exciting
wood, including use of FC schemes and agri-environment schemes using
grazing. We will also visit Hallin Hag, an upland oakwood SSSI actually in
favourable condition.Although the woods form part of the Geltsdale and
Glendue SSSI, this SSSI was notified for its upland moorland and bird
habitats. Recently the woodlands with hundreds of veteran trees were
recognized as one of the last sizeable examples of upland wood pasture in
England (100 ha). It contains a wealth of lichens and bryophytes, and is
still reminiscent of the ‘wild wood’. Black grouse, red squirrel and the hen
harrier are amongst its rarities and have to be managed for. These existing
woodland remnants serve as a template for a new 200 ha wood pasture to be
established over the brow of the hill, giving the opportunity to introduce
the re-wilding principles already applied in the Netherlands.
